BREAKING NEWS: Keyshawn Davis Loses Again to Andy Cruz, Wins Silver in Tokyo Olympics

Article by Rick Mohamed

Tokyo, Japan (August 8, 2021) Keyshawn Davis finished his impressive run in the Tokyo Olympics, winning the silver medal in the lightweight division after losing for the 4th straight time to his nemesis, Cuba’s Andy Cruz in the final for the gold medal. Previously, Cruz had defeated Davis 5-0 in their previous 3 matches; this time, in their most competitive match yet, he prevailed 4-1.

Davis was trying to become the first American boxer in any division to win the gold medal since boxing Hall of Famer Andre Ward did it in 2004 at Athens, Greece 17 long years ago. He was also aiming to become the first American lightweight since boxing legend and current boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya accomplished the feat in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain.

Earlier, super heavyweight Richard Torrez Jr. also lost his gold medal final match to Jalolov Bakhodir of Uzbekistan. Torrez Jr. also comes home with a silver medal.

They are joined by featherweight Duke Ragan, who earned his silver medal on Friday after his tough loss in the gold medal final to Albert Batyrgaziev of the Russian Olympic Committee 3-2.

Three American boxers, 3 silver medals. Not bad at all.

While it is disappointing they didn’t bring home the gold, they have nothing to be ashamed of: they performed admirably, pulling off upsets and impressing us at every turn. Let us praise them, & hold them up: they’ll eventually be professional champions in the future, and we can then say we knew them when!
