Fight Night Recap: Josh Taylor Rises, Wins- Barely | Chris Colbert Upset | Gary Antuanne Russell Rolls

Josh Taylor

Jack Catterall’s highway robbery vs. Josh Taylor! Unified lightweight champion Josh Taylor survived 8th round knock down and a point deduction to retain his undisputed 140lb crown, but there should have clearly been a new world champion crowned this night. Jack Catterall did everythiing he could short of a KO to win, but Taylor walked away the victor.

Taylor dodged a bullet. Catterall was coming back after a long layoff from the ring, but he took the fight to Taylor, and hard.

Though Taylor retains his title and thus keeps his marketability to get a big fight vs. the welterweight champions Yordenis Ugas, Errol Spence Jr., and Terence Bud Crawford, his performance didn’t strike fear into their hearts. Actually, the lackluster showing is only blood in the water, and the welterweight sharks are coming for him!

Chris Colbert overlooked former Olympian Pedigree Hector Garcia last night, but was upset and beaten in easy fashion for his troubles. Colbert was asked prior to the fight if he had been watching tape since Garcia was a last-minute opponent (replacing Roger Gutierrez, who’d contracted Covid). Colbert’s answer was “No. He has 2 legs, 2 hands and a head for me to hit!”

Well, we wonder how did that work out for him? In addition, a day before the fight he said he doesn’t plan on fighting long, because it’s not a fun thing to do!! Huh? Here’s a fighter who wants the big money to fight Haney & Tank. He was caught looking past Garcia and we witnessed the end result! An L.

Gary Antuanne Russell stopped Victor Postol in late 10th round stoppage as a step up 140Lb fight. Russell, the younger brother of former featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr. and one of the Fighting Russell family, boosted his record to 15-0. The referee stepped in and called the fight, though there were only a few seconds left. Postol seemed as if he could’ve continued to complete the fight. Russell was comfortably ahead on all 3 judges’ scorecards, however. He would’ve won a unanimous decision even if the fight were to finish.

Russell is now eligible for a big-money title fight of his own. Whichever champion takes him on will have a tough gritty opponent to deal with!

Cheers to the Russells and their trainer father, Gary Sr., who is having serious medical issues that keep him from actively training his sons as he normally did.
