Former Champ Richard Commey Shakes Off Ring Rust With 6th Rd TKO vs Marinez

Article by Rick Mohamed

With rival Teofimo Lopez looking on, Commey ends his absence from the ring with an impressive win.

Former IBF lightweight Champ Richard Commey returned to the ring on Feb 13th vs, Jackson Marinez at the MGM Gtand in their Las Vegas Bubble. Commey had been absent from the ring for 14 months after his devastating loss when he lost his IBF lightweight strap to current champion Teofimo Lopez.
In this fight, Commey started out the gate with a somewhat slow start. This happens when a fighter stays away from his craft and tends to wait around, opposed to getting to work like he once did when active. Commey said his corner was telling him ‘hey let’s get to work, get the jab going, setup ya combinations, touch him’
Keep in mind that this fight was close leading up to the 6th round stoppage.
Commey finally started getting his rhythm back and letting his hands go to much success leading up to the 6th round. He sent Marinez to the canvas for the first time, then he caught Marinez again with a solid right hand.
This caused referee Kenny Baylis to step in and stop the fight, giving Commey an impressive 6th round TKO comeback stoppage.
Sitting ringside to cheer Commey on at his comeback fight was the man that took his strap, Teofimo Lopez. This was nothing but pure class.
It shows the respect and love that these fighters have for one another. We may see Lopez give Commey a rematch. Fighters understand that this is a business. You step inside that square, that’s your livelihood.
That’s how you provide for your family. There are no friends inside that square, however. First, handle business, then go back to being cordial friends with each another, period!
This was a close fight for Commey: the judges had the fight as a split at the time of the 6th round TKO stoppage came, so it was good for Commey to have caught Marinez when he did. This will definitely be a new quest for another title shot.
Well boxing fans we had another great night of fights. Remember, I want you to share your thoughts as well. Until next time. #THEBRAWLERSSPORTSBOXINGSHOW LETSGOCHAMPS!!!
