Countdown to Canelo Alvarez vs Avni Yildirim

Article by Rick Mohamed

Canelo Alvarez vs. Avni Yildirim on Feb. 27, 2021 @ Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, FL.

Canelo Alvarez is on a mission: to unify the super middleweight titles. First, he unified the WBA & WBC belts when he soundly beat Callum Smith in December 2020.
His next move will be Feb 27, 2021, when he takes on Avni Yildirim. If he defeats Yildirim, he will seek to take on Billy Joe Saunders for Saunder’s WBO belt. The winner will then take on Caleb Plant, the IBF champion. He recently defeated Caleb Truax to retain his title.
The biggest name in the division is of course Alvarez, so it’s unrealistic for any fighter in the division to refuse a Canelo matchup. In addition, there is the huge lure of all those championship belts. It’s a dream come true for any challenger.
Canelo recently split from Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions  and is now working with Eddie Hearn and his Matchroom Promotions. This seemed to have freed him to make the big moves he was apparently unable to make when he was with Golden Boy.

Such a fight promises to be a big payday as well, which is rare in this division. Others wanting a title shot, like Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade, are definitely waiting in the wings. Well, boxing fans, this is an exciting time for the 168 lb. division. There will be some very interesting fights in the months ahead. By the end of 2021, belts will definitely be changing hands. What do you think?
